History of Kal's Cards
Kalwinder Dhaliwal and I have been working together for some time now. He had originally approached Evelyn with an interest in getting a job and needed to improve his I.T. skills. Evelyn referred him to me and after an assessment we started to spend 1hr a week together.
Progress was slow but since then we started to looked at how his CV is presented, online job applications and the impact of work on his benefits. His real interest in handmade cards was realised so we looked at his personal designs then copyright laws and started making new designs in MS Publisher. We did analysis of costs and profit (MS Excel) and performed market research in Uxbridge to get feedback from the public, then made changes. Through our market research, it was decided to produce “emotional wellbeing” cards as “mental health” was a criticism not well received by the public. However, they are essentially the same thing.
He has been involved with the sales process on eBay and finally we have been to a local Uxbridge art/card shop (Boville Wright, opposite Tesco). Kalwinder has supplied them a number of cards with three different designs and produced an invoice using MS Excel which has been paid. We have recently started to cold call organisations to sell the cards and are following up an opportunity with a local college to provide the "Underground Thoughts" image above as a poster for their student to liase with Student Support Services.
The main motivation for this idea was the feeling created when someone gives a “Thinking of You!” card to someone who needs it. In that moment, isolation is reduced and a door is opened for the recipient. Every decision was made by Kalwinder and without him this would never have happened. For me that is the real reward.
Please support Kalwinder (Kalscards). You can by either visit Boville Wright in Uxbridge (You could have a look at his cards if you get a chance anyway) OR recommend the cards to others. You could donate or forward the donation page for the crowdfunding page above. OR you could just say congratulations to Kalwinder when you see him, which I know he will appreciate.
Thanks to everyone who have helped! Especially to Evelyn and Phil.
This is a service user making a difference with our help. As we know, in mental health, small things can make a big difference.
